The Capital City Marathon Association is dedicated to supporting healthy living. For 40 years, the Association has been dedicated to involving volunteers, local schools and businesses. We are community driven, not profit driven.
The marathon, half marathon, five mile and kids' run are organized and supported by volunteers. We do use a timing company to provide accurate race results whether runners are participating to qualify for the Boston Marathon or for their own well-being. This allows us to both charge the lowest rates possible and provide a quality experience. Our intent is to provide running opportunities for anyone inclined to run.
Area High Schools and Community College
The Association has come to rely on high school cross country teams to support our Marathon Training Group training runs early Saturday mornings January through May. Their volunteer experience culminates the third weekend in May when the actual race event is held. Youth learn about community participation and the Association maintains an important involvement with local high schools and school sports. In all, $15,000 or more in grants is given to cash strapped high school running sports and student athletes in our community. This year we are working with the following schools:
Additionally, South Puget Sound Community College has contributed to the Marathon Training Group and other activities. Students from sport programs assist in the preparation of nutritious foods for runners following the Saturday long training runs. Students have also helped with other activities such as at the finish line on Marathon Weekend. The college also assisted in retrieving archival materials when the Association compiled the history of CCMA events when our 35th Anniversary was celebrated in 2016. The CCMA provides an annual $1,000 donation to the SPSCC Foundation for athlete support in recognition of these volunteer activities.
Small Project Support
A number of local organizations are provided the use of CCMA equipment and expertise so that they can produce local runs.
Local Government, Businesses, Volunteers
Our event is "home grown." We take great pride in supporting our local businesses, and purchase our goods locally as often as possible. The designs you see each year - on our shirts and registration materials - are developed by a local graphic designer. We are proud of having a good working relationship with our local government officials. We work with three levels of government to ease the impact of our event on state, city and county facilities and property. Representatives of each governmental organization have been very supportive of the Capital City Marathon over the years. They have assisted us with road closures, police, emergency services and anything else that needed to be done. We owe our supporters (volunteers, local businesses, governmental agencies, runners, high schools, sponsors* and others) a great deal of gratitude for helping the Capital City Marathon Association achieve a very successful annual local running event.
